From the “Express Shipped” green bottle pours a beautiful golden beer with great clarity and a stunning white head. The massively tall foam hung out for a while before disintegrating to loose bubbles and dotting the glass in lace.
The aroma screams classic Czech pilsner with it’s floral, spicy bouquet of hop aromas which gently blanket the mildly sweet malt and finishes off with soft, clean water.
Pilsner malt sweetness and a faint diactyl, soft butter-like note is quickly washed away by spicy floral hops, which tumble through to the clean-finishing flavor.
Supremely soft on the tongue, Pilsner Urquell has a crisp but not overly carbonated feeling with a soft dry, bitterness that balances the medium, malty body with haste. Clean finishing, “The Original Pilsner” remains a smooth pleasure sip after sip.
I’ve read quite a few accounts that the recipe has been altered over time and Pilsner Urquell isn’t the same beer it once was, but, having not experienced it some 170 years ago, I can’t comment on their truthfulness. I can, however, say that I’ve experienced standard transportation Pilsner Urquell vs. it’s new counterpart, “Express Shipped”, and sending this over ASAP in new packing which keeps light from the green bottles is the only way to go. Delicious and sinfully refreshing with a low ABV, Pilsner Urquell is a superb and easy-to-find lager with subtle complexity and fantastic drinkability.
