Appearance
A light haze forms over Sweet Action as carbonation streams from the nucleation point, through the gorgeous golden-copper color to the billowing off-white head. Wispy lace adorns the glass as the foam lowers.
Smell
Dry-hopped abundance suggests a bitter red ale right from the get-go, but Sweet Action backs it up with plenty of caramel and amber malt for a balancing base. Light citrus fruit is buried towards the back with earthy undertones.
Taste
Amber malts offer a dribble of caramel across a thick slice of toasted wheat bread before shifting to the hops that kick off the nose. A blend of varieties, nothing stands out among the dominant earthiness and subtle fruitiness the hops offer. Dried fruit and breadiness certainly balance well though, reminding of mixed jam.
Mouthfeel
Honey sweetness is quickly pushed aside by dry, toasted malt and abruptly moves into a nice dry hop bitterness. Sweet Action is well balanced and very smooth on the tongue for a delicious-drinking beer.
Overall
An amalgam of styles, Sweet Action suggests an American Amber / Red Ale with it’s abundantly hopped profile reminiscent of a more mild IPA with earthy notes and toasted malt finish. Quite well balanced, they pull the beer of nicely, showcasing a blend of hops and malt for a drinkable ale!
