Brilliantly clear and golden yellow, this lighter, nicely carbonated beer has a tall, firm white head that leaves sheets of lace clinging to the sides of the glass for a picture-perfect pint!
Summit’s 2nd Thread IPA from their 21st Unchained batch opens with a slightly skunky hop profile that carries a bit of green grassiness akin to chlorophyll through the woody earthiness. Grainy pale malt accounts for the base of the beer and is reminiscent of cereal with just a touch of sweetness. As the head collapses, deeper whiffs can be taken by burying my nose in the glass, which reveals Starburst-like fruity candy nuances.
Cereal grain maltiness starts the beer and remains the focal point, oddly enough. The beer’s hops gently wash in with a far more balanced fruit and earth combo that leans a little towards citrus and finish out, for lack of a better word; sessionable.
Light-bodied on the verge of feeling thin, this well-carbonated and crisp Session IPA does have one thing down well, and that’s its mildly bitter, somewhat dry lingering finish that captures the essence of sessionable drinkability of this style.
While neither the aroma nor flavor are even slightly off-putting, neither strike me as great examples of the attributes this style should have. The mildly skunky, earthy aromatics of the hops don’t tickle my fancy but don’t quite come into their own in the grainy malt flavor either. Where they do shine however, is in the gentle bittering characteristics of the drinkable body. Sessionable it is but it doesn’t quite come together in a completely satisfying package that would make me want to kick multiple pints back, unfortunately.
